New Release on Deck! The Prettier Sister

Tired of being unfavorably compared to her beautiful younger sister, Melanie travels to a distant city for a lengthy visit with her stylish aunt. She throws herself into volunteer work and settles into her new life—only to get caught trespassing on Lord Peyton’s neighboring property. Lord Peyton is the most arrogant, aggravating, conceited, and condescending man she’s ever met, but women seem to fall at his feet. As Melanie and Lord Peyton work together to help a local orphanage, will the cold enmity between them ever thaw?

The Prettier Sister is a standalone novel that shares a common world with the Mannequin Series. Pre-order now for a release on July 26th. Keep reading for an excerpt…

When she arrived at the small grove, she peered at the burgeoning fruit. As she had suspected, it would probably be another month before it was ready to pick. She sighed with disappointment — only to spot a gooseberry shrub nearby. Melanie gasped with delight and hastened over to pluck a handful of green berries. An abundance of sour flavor exploded on her tongue, and she wiggled with delight. She filled her mouth with as many berries as her cheeks could hold and then turned to scamper back to the lane.

A tall man stood in her way, his arms akimbo, and she froze.

His dark wavy hair fell loose about his face and shoulders, and he wore a linen shirt open to the waist. It appeared as if he’d paid as little attention to his attire that morning as had Melanie, but his state of dishabille lent him an air of danger whereas she looked like a ragamuffin.

He glowered. “You’re too old to be scrumping, wouldn’t you say?”

Since her mouth was full of fruit she could not respond. As she chewed and swallowed, a flush of embarrassment made her face feel as if it were on fire. Finally, she managed to clear her throat.

“Er…you should always pick the outside berries on a gooseberry shrub and prune the branches to gain the best crop.”

He looked at her askance. “So you’ve done me a favor?”

The scathing note in his voice stiffened her spine. “No, of course not, but you needn’t be so resentful. I’ve done little harm.”

“You’re a trespasser.”

Her temper flared. “I apologize for treading upon your hallowed property, sir! I am utterly and completely in the wrong and it won’t happen again.”

Melanie stomped past the man in a fury, made her way back to the split-rail fence, and climbed over. When she glanced over her shoulder, she discovered the man had actually followed her, as if to make sure she left.

With gritted teeth, she leaped over the ditch once more, and made her way up the lane. As she turned into her aunt’s drive, she refused to look back. If the nasty man wished to see where she lived, she could not stop him. No doubt he would complain about her to Aunt Ginny.

Upcoming Release • Rumer Has It

Jocelyn Rumer Conroy’s newspaper column allows her to write gossip about the population of Charleston while avoiding scrutiny of her own family secrets. She’s used to having her own way, but when arrogant and cosmopolitan Piers Wilde is brought into the newspaper, she chafes under his supervision. As they become writing partners in a new agony column, their relationship becomes fraught with tension…and an inconvenient attraction that cannot be denied.

A sweet historical romance set in 1910 Charleston.

I became interested in Charleston, South Carolina when my son began to attend college there. Although the town has changed and grown since it was founded in 1670, due to the War Between the States, a horrific earthquake in 1886, and numerous hurricanes, it has retained a unique sophisticated and cultured charm.

Rumer Has It is set in an era when rapid technological advancements began to shape America into a more modern society. Electricity, automobiles, telephones, silent movies, and the typewriter were becoming common. Hemlines were rising a trifle and the use of cosmetics for young ladies was no longer taboo. Of course, human nature being what it is, gossip was ubiquitous and rumors flew as quickly as a redtailed hawk after a field mouse.

My headstrong heroine, Jocelyn Rumer Conroy, works for a local newspaper as a gossip columnist and in sales. She loves her job…until handsome, arrogant Piers Wilde is hired as the new senior editor. When they become writing partners in an agony column, fireworks ensue.

Rumor has it that a certain lady and a certain gentleman may be falling in love…if they can only stop arguing first.

Rumer Has It will be released on July 28, 2020. Reserve your Kindle copy HERE.

Here’s an excerpt from Chapter One!

Love Denied

Staunton, Virginia

May, 1899

Asa Ballard grinned as he urged Fancy Dancer into a trot. When the gig surged forward, Kat Inverness shrieked with delight and clutched his arm. If he hadn’t been driving so fast along the narrow country lane, he would have stolen a kiss from those delicious lips. Of course, he had good reason to believe such a liberty might be freely given, judging by the way Kat clung to him. The thrilling thought made his pulse race along with the gig.

“We’re flying, Miss Inverness.” He chuckled. “Only the fastest chariot will do for the most beautiful creature of my acquaintance.”

Kat gave him a sidelong glance. “I’ve missed your flattery, Mr. Ballard!”

“I speak the truth.”

The corners of her mouth turned up. “If that’s the case, why have you stayed away so long?”

“Learning to be an architect takes time…like wooing a lady.”

“Let us hope that a proper courtship does not take four years.” She tossed her head. “A girl could turn to dust as she waits.”

“No man would be foolish enough to delay overlong and let a girl like you slip through his fingers.”

Kat snuggled even closer and he caught a whiff of her intoxicating fragrance. Life was truly a wonderment as long as she was by his side. When the gates of Hawthorn House came into view, he slowed his horse to a walk. Nevertheless, Kat kept her hand firmly around his arm—and her presence felt as necessary to him as the air in his lungs.

He nodded toward the hedges surrounding the property. “If the hawthorn is in bloom, it must be May.”

“Indeed, it must.” She giggled. “We shall have to run three times around a hawthorn tree and make a wish.”

“Before or after our picnic?”

“It had best be beforehand.” Kat’s nod was decisive. “I won’t be able to run on a full stomach.”

He chuckled. “You’ll run faster if I’m chasing you.”

“Will I?” Her expression turned coy. “And what if I prefer to be caught?”

Asa gave her a mock frown. “Miss Inverness, I believe you’re flirting with me.”

“I might be.” She paused. “Then again, I might not.”

“Minx.”

Asa drove the gig up the long drive, past the great house, and to the stables. After he relinquished the horse’s reins to the stable boy, he lifted Kat down to the ground.

“You’re lighter than a thistle.” He made no effort to remove his hands from her tiny waist. “I shall have to feed you cake.”

Her expression brightened. “I adore cake.”

Asa leaned over to whisper in her ear. “I adore cake, too.”

“Oh, you made me shiver.” When she stepped back, a mischievous twinkle lit her exquisite eyes—one the color of lapis and the other an emerald green. “Where are we to have our picnic?”

He pointed. “In the corner of the estate, between that hawthorn tree and the hedge. After I retrieve the hamper from the gig, I’ll escort you.”

“Last one there is a bullfrog!” Kat darted off across the rolling lawn.

“Hey—that’s not fair!”

Chuckling, Asa grabbed the wicker hamper from underneath the seat, along with a brown leather tube on a strap. After he put one arm through the strap, he loped off after Kat at a slow speed, enjoying the pursuit more than he would have thought possible. He’d been fond of her ever since he could remember, but four years of faithful correspondence had fixed his affections permanently. If the day unfolded like he had planned, perhaps he would shortly be able to call Katherine Inverness his own.

Excerpt:

As Miss Christensen spoke, Will noticed her eyes were the color of the pigment he often used to paint a deep blue sky. Her lips reminded him of a pastel chalk he employed to color roses, and the heightened blush on her cheek echoed the shade he favored for certain spectacular sunsets, just before the sun winked out altogether. The periwinkle silk of her gown set off her loveliness perfectly, and his fingers twitched in frustration. If he had any art supplies at hand, he would have loved to sketch her portrait.

She gave him a piercing glance. “Mr. Winter?”

“What?” Will snapped to attention. “Sorry. My mind was elsewhere.”

Her gaze lingered on his clothes. “I was saying that you’re a trifle taller than Mr. Leopold and broader in the chest, so I’ll summon a tailor from the village to alter everything according to your measurements.”

Will glanced down at himself, bewildered. As far as he could tell, the elegant suit fit him perfectly. “Do you people really notice such things as a half-inch here or a quarter-inch there?”

She shook her head. “You must stop referring to genteel people as another species, Mr. Winter. You are one of us now.”

He shrugged. “It doesn’t feel that way.”

“You look the part, nevertheless.”

She rose from behind her desk and came around to join him and Mr. Pace. Once more, Will was enveloped in a cloud of her heady fragrance. He didn’t know if she could smell him too, but at least she didn’t rush over to open the window this time.

“Now we must work on the rest of you,” she said.
